How Many Tattoo Removal Sessions Will I Actually Need?
The real answer is "it depends" — but on what? Tattoo age, ink colors, location on the body, prior treatments, and skin tone all change the count. Here is how we estimate session counts at Miami Skin Spa Brickell.

The single most common question we get at consultations is some version of "how many sessions?" The honest answer is that the range is wide — anywhere from 4 sessions to 12+ — and the spread depends on factors that are mostly outside your control. Here is exactly how we estimate session counts at Miami Skin Spa in Brickell, so you walk into your consult knowing what to expect.
The Five Factors That Set the Count
When you sit down for a consult, your laser technician is looking at five things:
1. Ink Color
This is the single biggest variable. The laser delivers light at specific wavelengths, and different inks absorb those wavelengths differently. The pattern, roughly:
- Easiest to remove: Black, dark navy, dark brown
- Moderate difficulty: Red, orange, dark green
- Most difficult: Bright green, teal, yellow, white, light blue
Yellow and white pigments do not absorb our wavelengths efficiently. They can be significantly lightened but may not fully disappear. We will tell you up front if any colors in your tattoo are likely to be stubborn.
2. Tattoo Age
Counterintuitively, older tattoos clear faster. Ink particles break down naturally over time, so a 15-year-old tattoo is already partway gone before the first laser session. A tattoo from 6 months ago has dense, intact ink that takes more sessions to shatter.
3. Location on the Body
Tattoo location matters because removal depends on your immune system clearing broken-down ink, and that clearance is more efficient closer to the lymphatic system.
- Faster: Chest, upper back, neck, upper arms
- Slower: Hands, feet, ankles, wrists
Tattoos on hands and feet often take 2–3 more sessions than the same tattoo on the chest or shoulder.
4. Prior Removal Attempts
If you had laser removal elsewhere that did not finish the job, residual scar tissue around the tattoo can slow things down. We will assess this at the consult and adjust expectations.
5. Skin Tone
For darker skin tones, we use more conservative settings to protect against hypopigmentation. The result is the same — full clearance is realistic — but the timeline is slightly longer.
The Typical Range
Most patients need 6–12 sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart. Here is how that distributes:
- 4–6 sessions: Small, older, black-ink tattoos in good locations (e.g. a 10-year-old wrist tattoo)
- 6–9 sessions: Most common range — medium tattoos with one or two colors
- 9–12+ sessions: Newer tattoos, multi-color pieces, hands/feet, prior removal attempts, or cover-ups
What If You Only Want to Lighten It?
You do not need to commit to full removal. Many of our patients use tattoo removal specifically to lighten a tattoo for a cover-up by their tattoo artist. That usually takes 3–5 sessions — enough to give your artist a clean canvas without taking the tattoo all the way down.
Tell us your goal at the consult and we will plan a shorter course targeted at lightening rather than clearing.
Why Sessions Are Spaced 6–8 Weeks Apart
After each laser session, your immune system is clearing ink particles for the next 4–6 weeks. Treating sooner than that does not speed things up — the laser only works on ink that is still in the dermis. The 6–8 week spacing also gives your skin time to fully heal between treatments, which is what keeps the process safe.
Permanent Makeup Is Different
Eyebrow, lip liner, and eyeliner removal — including microblading — usually clears in 1–3 sessions of 15–20 minutes each. Permanent makeup is a small area with a single ink, so the math changes considerably. Our permanent makeup removal pricing reflects that shorter course.
How We Estimate at Your Consult
The free 20–30 minute consult is where we put a real number on your tattoo. We will:
- Photograph the tattoo
- Assess ink density, layering, and color
- Review your skin tone and any prior treatments
- Ask about your goal — full clearance vs. cover-up lightening
- Give you a session-count estimate and a written quote
The estimate is honest, not optimistic. If your tattoo is likely to need 10 sessions, we will tell you that up front — better to know going in than to be surprised at session 6.
Pricing by Session Count
Pricing is structured so the longer course you commit to, the better the per-session rate:
- Per session — Highest per-session price, useful if you are unsure or doing a small test
- 4-session package — Better per-session rate, good for cover-up lightening or smaller tattoos
- Complete removal bundle — Best rate, saves 10% off pay-per-session, with 24-month financing available
